The National Science Olympiad (NSO) is one of the most prestigious science competitions in Asia, organized annually by the INDAIN BRILLIANT OLYMPIAD(IBO). It is designed to cultivate scientific reasoning and logical thinking among students from Class 1 to 12.

## Overview of IBO NSO
The NSO is a national-level scholarship exam that tests not just textbook knowledge, but the application of scientific concepts. It follows a two-level structure for most students:
- Level 1: Open to all students in Classes 1–12.
- Level 2: For qualifying students from Classes 3–12 (based on Level 1 performance).
## Exam Structure & Pattern
The #IBO NSO is a 60-minute objective-type test consisting of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). There is no negative marking.
| Class Group | Total Questions | Total Marks | Section Breakdown |
| Classes 1–4 | 35 | 40 | Logical Reasoning, Science, Achievers Section |
| Classes 5–10 | 50 | 60 | Logical Reasoning, Science, Achievers Section |
| Classes 11–12 | 50 | 60 | Physics & Chemistry, Achievers Section, Math/Biology |
### The “Achievers Section”
This is the most critical part of the exam. Questions in this section carry higher weightage (2–3 marks each) and focus on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Excelling here is often the key to a top international rank.
## Syllabus Highlights
The syllabus is aligned with CBSE, ICSE, and major State Boards.
- Primary (1-5): Basics of living/non-living things, plants, animals, human body, food, and environmental science.
- Middle (6-10): Detailed concepts in Physics (Light, Heat, Electricity), Chemistry (Matter, Metals/Non-metals), and Biology (Cells, Reproduction, Tissues).
- Senior (11-12): Stream-specific content (Physics, Chemistry, and either Mathematics or Biology).
## Registration Process
Students cannot register for the #IBO NSO individually. Registration must be done through the school.
- School Enrollment: Schools must register at least 10 students to be eligible.
- Admit Cards: Issued by IBO through the school coordinators 1-2 weeks before the exam.
## Preparation Tips for Top Ranks
- Master the Fundamentals: Stick to your NCERT or school textbooks as the primary source.
- Practice Logical Reasoning: This section account for 10-20% of the marks and requires regular practice of patterns, analogies, and coding-decoding.
- Solve Previous Year Papers: These are vital for understanding the difficulty level of the Achievers Section.
- Use Mock Tests: Time management is key, as you only have 60 minutes for up to 50 complex questions.
